A powerful and "authoritative" Friulano from a leading natural wine producer in Friuli, North-Eastern Italy. This single-vineyard wine reflects the climate and soils of the Brazan site, where 80 year old vines grow on an organically managed hillside of marl and sandstone in the Collio Goriziano. Here, the relative humidity and temperature variation has produced a white wine of real depth and power, with complex perfume of pithy fruit, aromatic herbs and oliy mineral characters. This complexity has only been accentuated by eighteen months aging on lees. A fascinating and profound wine for this price, the Brazan will not stay in stock for long!

Its Origins

"Ferdinando Zanusso founded I Clivi when he returned to Italy after thirty years and three different careers in Africa, including a stint in the United Nation’s World Food Program. His son Mario joined just after its inception and is involved in all aspects of the farm. Together they seek the fullest expression of their highly reputed terroir in Friuli’s esteemed Colli Orientali del Friuli and Collio growing districts. What distinguishes I Clivi from their peers are their devastatingly low yields, steep terrain, and old vines that range from sixty to eighty years of age. It is not surprising that their soils of calcareous clay, or ponca in local dialect, have been noted for their similarities to Burgundy’s Côte d’Or and organic farming goes without saying for vineyards of this caliber and rigor. All work in the cellar follows similar principles and attention to detail. Hand-harvested bunches are pressed very gently at Champagne levels so to squeeze only the purest must, a philosophy that sets the stage for the superb quality of the finished wines. Using only stainless steel vats for the white wines, the Zanusso’s produce wines of precision and definition without the interference of maceration or prolonged contact with the skin." — Coeur Wine Co

What The Critics Say

93+/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata

"Bright straw yellow. Wild, soil-accented nose combines apple, grapefruit, ripe pear, crushed stone, juniper, and shiso leaf. Broad, concentrated and perfumed, with captivating notes of stone, sage and wild fennel. Closes dense, bracing and long, boasting real flavor authority. Spent two years on the lees; in this and the other single vineyard wines by I Clivi, it is the terroir that stands out more than the grape variety. Made from a single vineyard in the Collio; Brazzano is the Italian name of a specific area within the Collio." Drink 2020 - 2028

Winemaker notes on current vintage

"Peach flowers, pink grapefruit, anice, hydrocarbons, petrol. Profound, dense and intense. Vinification: Same vinification as the Friulano San Pietro, but with longer maturation on the wines’ own lees: 18 months, always in stainless steel. This longer maturation drives the wine aromatic expression from primary, variety-related aromas to a deeper, more terroir-driven character."

93/100 Decanter, Simon Woolf (2015 vintage)

"I Clivi’s two Friulano ‘crus’ are vinified and aged only in steel – the real magic happens with bottle age. Brazan is the more expressive now, with seductive jasmine flower and pear drop aromas leading into a tight, flinty palate with elegant, leesy texture."
