Our best $20 Aussie red? Glaetzer dials it back slightly to make a serious all-rounder, with a slurpy richness from Shiraz and Cabernet cassis bringing fine tannins and a long finish of exotic earthy spices. Complete and satisfying, this is very, very good drinking for the price.

Shiraz/Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon

Its Origins

From vines 15-8 years old and aged in old oak for 12 months this is the first release of this new wine from Heartland and they have put their best foot forward to impress at the $20 price point. This certainly overdelivers as proven by Star Rating from James Halliday meaning it is a wine of excellent value for money.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Vinsomniac

"2016 Spice Trader Shiraz Cabernet - Damson, plum, a kiss of sweet edged oak to frame things up. You think you have its measure - another glimpse - cedar, a sprinkle of herb, seasoning. Succulent fruit guides, leading to a dark chocolate tinged body. Fruit again, bolstering the middle third, pumping things up a little. A vein of cocoa runs along the finish, intertwined with the fruit, a tandem dance to the end. 12/09/2019.

92/100 Tony Love's Top 100 Wines, July 2016 (2013 vintage)

"This blend can really deliver above price-based expectations, here with a lovely earthy, spicy, foresty, floral, herbal set of aromatics then the cabernet adding its varietal enticements that follow through with a good presence in the mouth from soft tactile tannins that allow some licorice-like nuances to lift and linger in the finish. Top easy drinking."

90/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Steven Creber (2014 vintage)

"Easy-going, undemanding, and ultimately quite satisfying. This is a wine which does its job very well. It offers ripe berry aromas, a touch of spice, a hint of chocolate and warm earthiness on the bouquet. The palate is soft, although quite mouthfilling, with slightly sweet-toned fruit which has a definite regionality about it. Right on the money for its place in the market."
