Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Fresh, fruity and flavoursome pinot gris with tree fruit, apple and pear flavours, plus a seasoning of ginger and nut characters from yeast autolysis. The palate has an initial tease of sweetness but finishes dry. Delicious pinot gris - great now but no rush. 26/5/2018" Drink 2018 - 2022
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 vintage)
"Grown in the Brancott Valley (principally) and at Rapaura, the 2015 vintage (5*) was mostly (80 per cent) fermented with indigenous yeasts in old oak barrels and wood-matured for seven months; 20 per cent of the blend was handled with cultured yeasts in tanks. A lovely young wine, showing greater complexity than most Pinot Gris, it is fleshy and vibrantly fruity, with mouthfilling body and deep, ripe peach/pear flavours, slightly sweet (10 grams/litre of residual sugar) and well-rounded. A rich, subtle, finely poised wine."
