Its Origins

After searching the world for the perfect place to grow cool-climate wines, the Thomas family established the Greystone Vineyard on the slopes of the Teviotdale hills in the Waipara Valley in 2004. They planted 39 hectares of the 153 hectare property of predominantly north-westerly facing land, concentrating on matching blocks with clones and varieties. There were many options with a range of altitudes from 60m to 150m above sea level and soil profiles from light clays through to those rich in limestone content. While Pinot Noir makes up over 60% of the plantings they could see the potential for other varieties in the region and planted blocks of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and even a small block of Syrah.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell

"Quite a ripe, fleshy chardonnay with peach, stone fruit, wet stone, mineral, roasted nut and bran biscuit flavours. A smooth-textured wine with plenty of power and a lingering finish. Can be appreciated now but has development potential 14/2/2018." Drink 2018 - 2023

19-/20 Raymond Chan

"Bright golden-yellow colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is full with softly concentrated aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits and citrus fruit harmoniously entwined with an amalgam of creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak. The aromatics are densely packed, unfolding suggestions of buttery MLF. Full-bodied, the palate has integrated ripe flavours of yellow stonefruits, citrus and tropical fruit and creamy oak with buttery notes. The fruit is fulsome and mouthfilling with breadth and roundness, the acidity ripe and soft. There is considerable alcoholic power and drive, and the wine carries positively to a solid, deep, sustained finish. Match with roast pork over the next 4 years. Hand-picked fruit, one block WBP, and the clone 95 fruit foot-crushed, the fruit indigenous yeast fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 25% new French oak barriques, with 100% MLF. 18.5/20 Jan 2017 RRP $40.00." Drink 2017 - 2021
