A serious Syrah from a top vineyard in Marlborough. A legend among New Zealand's single vineyards, the Clayvin was recently acquired by Giesen to serve as the flagship in their range of premium terroir labels. Capturing the depth and aromatic precision which we might expect from Marlborough, the Clayvin is a delicious Syrah to decant now or cellar.

Its Origins

Giesen Wines are a long established label on the New Zealand scene. But as the family have gained expertise and expanded into personal projects - such as Marcel Giesen’s little known but lauded boutique Waipara estate, Bell Hill - the Giesen label too has shifted to capture their deep expertise in terroir and technique by adding new high-investment, single vineyard offerings such as those from the "revered" Clayvin vineyard, made famous by Fromm wines. The three German brother’s Alex, Theo and Marcel came to New Zealand to establish their first Riesling vineyards in Canterbury. In a then-small market, the Geisen brand grew with the times to take a position as one of New Zealand’s leading producers, and still enjoys a significant local and international distribution for various levels of high quality wine in many varieties and styles. Their new mid and upper level offerings are gaining significant recognition: wines like the Clayvin Pinot Noir is not only from great terroir but beautifully styled, placing it second to none among New Zealand’s premium examples of the grape.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Cameron Douglas

"Young wine aromas yet intense, varietal, quite peppery and fruity as well as complex. As the wine opens up in glass the power and intrigue build. Aromas and flavours of purple flowers, dark raspberry, black cherry, some black currant and a whisper of fruit-cake. Dry, bold and powerful with abundant fine tannins and back bone of acidity, a power-house core of fruit and oak to match. Long finish." Drink 2020 - 2030.

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Elegant syrah that's moderately dense with plum, raspberry, vanilla, violet, anise and spice flavours. Silken-textured wine with appealing fruit sweetness balanced by ripe tannins and fruity acidity. A classy syrah with obvious cellaring potential. 16/4/2019." Drink 2019 - 2026

90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"There are about 160 cases of the gorgeously scented 2016 Single Vineyard Selection Clayvin Syrah. Violets, pepper and purple raspberries appear on the seductive nose. This is the sort of aromatic, medium-bodied Syrah I could sit and happily smell for hours. -- This large family-owned firm is run by three brothers. They produce a wide array of offerings, ranging from inexpensive, entry-level wines that can sometimes represent decent values to a selection of single-vineyard bottlings that are capable of rivaling Marlborough's best." Drink 2019 - 2023
