A top red from excellent vineyards in the heart of the Southern France. The inland area of Malepere is just below Cabardes, where this intriguing red is made in varieties that have crept down from Bordeaux to enjoy a much drier, warmer, riper climate. With lush darkish fruit and a deep, spicy structure, this is a compelling and complex French red to decant now or cellar.

Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec (Cot)

Its Origins

Wine Enthusiast named his winery Europe’s best in 2011, but Gerard Bertrand began as a rugby player representing France and Narbonne. It wasn’t until the early death of his father that he returned to take the reigns of the family operation, Domaine de Villemajou in Boutenac, Corbieres. He soon identified the potential of the Languedoc-Roussillon to produce rich yet bright, modern wines suited to world market trends and from there began acquiring labels and properties across the region. Balancing an organic and increasingly biodynamic viticulture with an evangelical zeal for exporting his Mediterranean ‘Art de Vivre’, Gerard Bertrand has quickly become one of the most important champions of that which epitomises Southern French wine of today: superb quality in quantity.

What The Critics Say

Jancis Robinson MW

"From a site that is more influenced by the Mediterranean than the Atlantic. Selected lots of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. Nicely judged and notably fresher than this producer's more typically Languedoc reds. It really does remind me of a top-quality Cabernet from a top-quality site in Chile – more New than Old World somehow. Very clean and accessible and attractive." Drink 2018 - 2024
