"Following a wine retail background going back to 1966, Paul and Jill Buttery established Gemtree Vineyards in 1980 when they purchased a vineyard on Tatachilla Road in the McLaren Vale. The grew the business releasing their own Gemtree label in 1998. Son Andrew Buttery now heads the company, and his sister Melissa and her husband Mike Brown look after the viticulture and winemaking. The company has made the commitment to sustainability, practising biodynamic farming and achieved Australian Certified Organic certification in 2011. Gemtree owns over 130 ha of vineyards across three main sites and makes a large range of wines over different tiers." Raymond Chan
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on 2015 vintage
"Deep, vibrant opaque red. A complex and condensed aromatic profile of plummy black fruits, concentrated red fruits, raspberry conserve and mocha. This wine is rich, textural, balanced and decadent. Rich plum and mulberry flow from the front to the back palate with seamless integration of fine textural tannins and balanced acidity. This beautifully crafted wine is poised for greatness and will reward the patient, flourishing for up to 20 years. Match with Osso Bucco with saffron risotto."
96/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2014 vintage)
"The bouquet and palate take you into hidden chambers of McLaren Vale, so intense are the multilayered fruits, the remarkable character is the lack of any demarcation between fruit, oak and, above all else, tannins. Lay this down for your favourite grandchildren."
5 Stars Raymond Chan (2012 vintage)
Very full, saturated black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The bouquet is refined and firmly concentrated with ripe blackberry and dark red berry fruits, entwined with spices, black pepper, lifted black and violet florals and exotic oak. Layers of toast and smoke unfold. The aromatics combine opulence with elegance. Full-bodied, the palate is rich and luscious with ripe black and red fruits complexed by layers of plums and liquorice, spices, florals tar and toasty oak. The concentrated fruit is supported fine-grained, powdery tannins forming a firm, weighty core with great presence, line and drive. The exotic fruit, violet floral, pepper and oak detail blossom, carrying through to a very long, nuanced finish. This is a rich, plush, concentrated Shiraz with weight, complexity and blossoming exotic detail. Match with roasted lamb, beef, venison and hard cheeses over the next 10-12+ years. 100% McLaren Vale Shiraz from the oldest estate vines, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 36 months in new French oak barriques. Australian Certified Organic.
