A new import for us, this Ernest Allen Shiraz is ridiculously rich and succulent. Parcels of Gemtree's finest organic fruit was hand-harvested at full ripeness then gently fermented and pressed, still in parcels, for 16 months in French oak that was selected to enhance sweetness, roundness and balance. Stellar ratings in a style that is generous and 'cuddly' when young, but will age seriously well. A local favourite over there, this is usually a cellar door sell-out. Find out why.

Its Origins

"Following a wine retail background going back to 1966, Paul and Jill Buttery established Gemtree Vineyards in 1980 when they purchased a vineyard on Tatachilla Road in the McLaren Vale. The grew the business releasing their own Gemtree label in 1998. Son Andrew Buttery now heads the company, and his sister Melissa and her husband Mike Brown look after the viticulture and winemaking. The company has made the commitment to sustainability, practising biodynamic farming and achieved Australian Certified Organic certification in 2011. Gemtree owns over 130 ha of vineyards across three main sites and makes a large range of wines over different tiers." Raymond Chan

What The Critics Say

95/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday (2014 vintage)

"Wild-fermented, matured in French barriques for 18 months. Inky purple-crimson, it is a distillation of all things McLaren Vale shiraz, jet black fruits, spice, dark chocolate and generous, supple tannins and oak."

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (2013 vintage)

"Medium garnet/purple, the 2013 Ernest Allan Shiraz has pronounced creme de cassis, blueberry compote and preserved plum aromas with notes of dark chocolate, licorice, Chinese five spice and menthol hints. Full-bodied and concentrated with firm, very fine-grained tannins and some apparent oak, it finishes long and multilayered."

17/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"Black fruit, juicy and ripe and full of tannic fuzz. Bold, glossy, heavy and just as it should be! (RH)"
