A bright and fresh red blend from organic producers in Australia's McLaren Vale. Lately Gemtree have further refined their handling to increase their wines' softness, giving these full bodied red grapes -- Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre -- a nice sense of delicacy and roundness, to go with vibrant freshness and definition from 2016's ideally long, moderate season. Made in an elegant modern Rhone style, this offers organic quality and juicy drinkability. Well worth a try!

Its Origins

"Following a wine retail background going back to 1966, Paul and Jill Buttery established Gemtree Vineyards in 1980 when they purchased a vineyard on Tatachilla Road in the McLaren Vale. The grew the business releasing their own Gemtree label in 1998. Son Andrew Buttery now heads the company, and his sister Melissa and her husband Mike Brown look after the viticulture and winemaking. The company has made the commitment to sustainability, practising biodynamic farming and achieved Australian Certified Organic certification in 2011. Gemtree owns over 130 ha of vineyards across three main sites and makes a large range of wines over different tiers." Raymond Chan

What The Critics Say

92/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Ned Goodwin

"Reductive out of the starting gates, this requires a good flush of air in the glass or better, the decanter. Behind the initial beam of camphor awaits kirsch, raspberry and bitter chocolate flavours. A trickle of quenching acidity and assuaging tannins keep things relatively firm in the mouth and on the straight and narrow toward a lingering finish." Drink by 2024

16/20 JancisRobinson.com

"Strong earthy aroma with a slightly ferrous, rusty note. Juicy and fruity with a baked but not burnt character. Fragrant, fresh and with just enough fibrous tannin to give crunch and bite. 40% Grenache, 33% Shiraz, 27% Mourvèdre. (RH)"Drink 2017 - 2022
