A beautiful dry Riesling from a German master. This is a superb entry-level Trocken (dry) Riesling from a producer mainly known for their front-rank, world class single vineyard wines. With a fairly light body and fresh acidity with bright aromatics of citrus and wet minerals, this also has a nice textural weight and classical harmony. Quality, quality stuff for a very accessible price.

Its Origins

The Haag family has been in wine for just a little while - since 1605, to be precise - and over that time they have been instrumental in the development of Brauneberger, an area that has been recognised as one of the Mosel’s best since the sixth century. At the helm today is the youthful Oliver Haag, whose father Wilhelm (son of Fritz) became recognised as a Riesling world leader, awarded the deceptively simple title of Winegrower of the Year in 1994. Oliver himself has at his back a full oenological training as well as extensive experience with a number of leading Riesling producers. With results so superb they effectively define a modern classic style of Mosel Riesling, it seems clear that the Haag family’s future in wine may be as sure as it’s past.

What The Critics Say

16/20 JancisRobinson.com

"Maybe I have mellowed, maybe Oliver Haag has, and maybe it’s the vintage. Of course he remains a dedicated follower of spontaneous fermentation, but his 2016 estate trocken shows a herbaceous fragrance that does not so much attack as intrigue. The flavour of green fruit and herbs is fresh, the acidity to the point, and the character of the wine racy and supported by just a tad of minerality. Bone dry. (MS)." Drink 2017 - 2019

92/100 Wine Enthusiast (2015 vintage)

"While more mineral than fruit-forward on the nose, this pretty, dry Riesling is quite yielding, suggesting ripe, rich pink grapefruit and white peach on the palate. It's feather light but silky in texture, balanced by a strike of lemon acidity that lingers on the finish."

90/100 Vinous, David Schildknecht (2015 vintage)

"Pungently aromatic, tangy, generously juicy fresh lime and apple are mouthwateringly salt-tinged and underlain with wet stone in this archetypical dry Mosel. Firm in feel, it’s refreshingly and downright grippingly sustained. And at 11.5 percent alcohol, it manages to evince a welcome sense of buoyancy, while the innervating efficacy of its acids acts like an energizing tonic. Quite some “entry-level” Riesling!"
