A powerful Cru Barolo from a highly regarded family producer. The Gramolere vineyard is located in Monforte d'Alba, where the family holding lies on slighly sandy limestone with a South-South West aspect. The result is a wine of great intensity and brooding fruit, with complex savoury undertones. Perhaps the most masculine cru in the Alessandria range, the Gramolere offers a great deal of pleasure and potential for the medium to longer term.

Its Origins

Crowning the small hilltop village of Verduno, the elegant 18th century cantina Fratelli Alessandria produces approx 5,000 wine cases from 14 hectares; including the wine crus of Monvigliero in Verduno & Gramolere in Monforte d'Alba in Piedmont. Their Barolo wines were recognised by King Carlo Alberto in 1843, identifying a notable quality that continues to be enhanced by the arrival of 5th generation Vittore, aside his uncle Alessandro and father Gian Battista. They are also proud producers of the Pelaverga wine, a charming and elegant pepper-scented thing from grapes grown almost in exclusivity around Verduno. -- Vittore's arrival in 2001, post commercial and oenological studies at Torino University, coincided with a period of positive change. 'More attention to detail' is how Vittore explains the improvements that have taken place over the past decade. No more so than in the vineyard, now a picture of health and source of bright fruit from appropriately low yields. 2001 was also the year that their single Monforte cru 'Gramolere' was released, echoing a regional trend. In the cantina: new static stainless steel tanks, better temperature control, the addition of a few French 500 litre tonneaux, while persevering with 15/20 day wild yeast fermentations & 30 hectolitre botte (slavonian & French oak) ageing have all combined to promote sales of bottled wine and thereby reduce their reliance upon sales to the bulk market; now down to approx 15% of production.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"If you consider the Barolo playbook at Fratelli Alessandria, the 2016 Barolo Gramolere takes the intensity and power up one more notch. You get black fruit and blackberry, but there is enough vibrant red fruit to keep this wine aligned with the more elegant and traditional side of Barolo. The wine shows compelling infinities with both the powerful and the elegant side of Nebbiolo. There are noticeable mineral notes and even a spot of savory salinity. However, Gramolere definitely has the power and inner grit to withstand long cellar aging. Only 7,000 bottles were made. — This is by far the finest set of wines I have tasted from Fratelli Alessandria, and I cannot recommend this estate enough for value-wine seekers and collectors alike. There is something for every Nebbiolo-loving palate in this portfolio, and all these wines hit the ball straight out of the park. Congratulations." Drink 2024 - 2050

93-96/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Barolo Gramolere is another super-classic Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria. Searing in its intensity, the 2016 is endowed with tremendous energy and pure cut. Black cherry, lavender, mint, anise and crushed rocks infuse the 2016 with striking layers of complexity and nuance. It, too, is likely to require a number of years to be at its best."

96/100 Wine Enthusiast, Kerin O'Keefe

Pressed rose, camphor, woodland berry, dark spice and new leather are just some of the aromas you'll find on this fragrant red. Radiant, structured and boasting finesse and depth, the palate delivers raspberry compote, mature morello cherry, cinnamon and menthol framed in taut refined tannins. It's well balanced, with bright acidity." Drink 2024 - 2036
