The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.
What The Critics Say
90-93/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"Still in barrel, the 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is shaping up to be an absolute gem. Naturally, the 2016 is still coming together. Its aromatic intensity, definition and total sense of finesse are the signatures of a superb Chianti Classico in the making. This is another 'don't miss' wine from Fèlsina." Drink 2023 -2041
93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2015 vintage)
"The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga is a wine of increased depth and power. The bouquet is redolent of dark fruit, dried cherry, grilled herbs and moist clay that has been wetted by rain drops. The wine shows power and determination on the close that gives it momentum and persistence. This wine shows good possibility for further evolution in the bottle over the next five years or more."
