The original facilities were erected in 1933, called Glenvale, and after decades of fortified wine production it wasn’t until the late 1970s - still very early in the New Zealand premium table wine market - that Glenvale created the Esk Valley label to meet that demand. Price wars in the 1980’s saw Glenvale perish and the Esk Valley label picked up by George Fistonich of Villa Maria. Although it has been able to operate as a separate winery and develop its increasingly historic and iconic position, the investment and backing of the Villa Maria group has ensured it access not only to the best personnel and technology, but the best markets. Today, Esk Valley is a benchmark of elegant, quality-focussed Hawkes Bay production and its ‘Terraces’ Bordeaux Blend is a towering classic of New Zealand red wine.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on 2018 vintage
"This is an elegant, complex and creamy textured chardonnay which vividly displays the
complexities of this great vineyard site. Flavours of white peach, grapefruit, flint and nuts
are to the fore with a long mineral finish. Naturally made, with a 'hands-off' approach it
is both food friendly and age-worthy and vividly exhibits the land in which it was grown.
Further complexity has been added with subtle oak and yeast-derived complexity from
long term barrel ageing. Suitable for vegan and vegetarian diets as the wine was bottled
with finings." Drink 2019 - 2025
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 vintage)
"Often one of the region's most distinguished Chardonnays. Highly fragrant, with a hint of 'struck match', the classy 2015 vintage (5*) was grown at two sites in northern Hawke's Bay (including the Esk Valley home block), and fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (30 per cent new). Elegant and weighty, it is youthful, with rich, peachy, citrusy and mealy flavours, impressive complexity and a sustained finish."
92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2017 vintage)
"The 2017 Winemakers Reserve Chardonnay comes from the Bayview Vineyard, a unique, dry-farmed site planted on marine soils that were under water until an earthquake in 1931 raised this portion of the seabed. Gentle struck match notes frame white peaches, pears and citrus in this medium to full-bodied wine. It's plump yet elegant, with a silky texture and a lingering finish. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years for its lush fruit."
