The four owners of Escarpment - Larry and Sue McKenna, Robert and Mem Kirby - met by chance through a mutual friend in 1998. But their shared sense that New Zealand had great things to offer the world of Pinot Noir saw them going into business the very same year. Using winemaker Larry McKenna's local knowledge they settled on Martinborough’s alluvial Te Muna terrace - then hardly on the map but now an important and renowned sub-region. A winery name was eventually chosen that was sufficiently sublime yet descriptive of the vineyard’s own distinctive landscape, but the name no doubt also makes reference to the famous limestone escarpment that forms the spine of France’s Burgundy region - from which McKenna draws his key traditions and inspirations. McKenna began his studies in his native Australia before his OE brought him to New Zealand, where his main position was CEO and Winemaker of Martinborough Vineyards over a period of extraordinary growth between 1986 and 1999. Since establishing Escarpment McKenna has consistently made superb terroir wines in many varietals, while further consolidating his particular reputation as New Zealand’s foremost expert in serious, savoury, premium Pinot Noir.
What The Critics Say

"Creamy-textured pinot blanc with vanilla, pepper and gently spicy flavours. An appealing wine in a restrained and rather elegant style. Dry, but not austere, with support from gentle acidity and very fine tannins. Good food wine - great with scallops 23/4/2018" Drink 2018 - 2022

"The nose is fresh with elegantly proportioned aromas of savoury white stonefruits, delicate nuances of herbs, subtle thirst-quenching minerals and suggestions of oxidative complexities. The aromatics are pure and focussed. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has lively and succulent flavours of white stonefruits with white floral elements and steely, mouthwatering minerals. The mouthfeel has vibrancy and vitality with crisp acidity, the wine flowing a light-textured phenolic line. This has excellent energy and tension, and the wine carries to a long and sustained finish of stonefruits and apples. This is a vibrant, lively and succulently juicy dry Pinot Blanc with white stonefruit, floral and mineral flavours on a focussed palate with fine textures and tension. Serve as an aperitif and with seafood over the next 3+ years. The sixth Pinot Blanc release from Escarpment. Fruit from the company’s Te Muna Road vineyard, given 12 hours skin contact and fully barrel-fermented to 13.4% alc. and <1 g/L RS, the wine aged 11 months in seasoned oak. 18.5/20 Mar 2018 RRP $29.00."
