A massive vintage for this high-scoring, single-site Pinot Noir. The Kupe is the top expression from Pinot master Larry McKenna from Escarpment. Immensely layered and generous as it unfolds, this wine is everything truly great Pinot should be: powerful yet ethereal and subtle, dense yet light, driven on the palate yet infinitely nuanced. Decant well or age a while. Superb!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

The four owners of Escarpment - Larry and Sue McKenna, Robert and Mem Kirby - met by chance through a mutual friend in 1998. But their shared sense that New Zealand had great things to offer the world of Pinot Noir saw them going into business the very same year. Using winemaker Larry McKenna's local knowledge they settled on Martinborough’s alluvial Te Muna terrace - then hardly on the map but now an important and renowned sub-region. A winery name was eventually chosen that was sufficiently sublime yet descriptive of the vineyard’s own distinctive landscape, but the name no doubt also makes reference to the famous limestone escarpment that forms the spine of France’s Burgundy region - from which McKenna draws his key traditions and inspirations. McKenna began his studies in his native Australia before his OE brought him to New Zealand, where his main position was CEO and Winemaker of Martinborough Vineyards over a period of extraordinary growth between 1986 and 1999. Since establishing Escarpment McKenna has consistently made superb terroir wines in many varietals, while further consolidating his particular reputation as New Zealand’s foremost expert in serious, savoury, premium Pinot Noir.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Escarpment's flagship pinot noir is the clear leader in terms of quality with its haunting perfume of floral, cherry and plum flavours underpinned by an appealing savoury edge and classy oak. It has a sleek and sensual texture, with impressive power and obvious cellaring potential." Drink 2018 - 2027

95/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"From a closely planted vineyard on Te Muna Road, the 2016 Kupe Pinot Noir offers an incredible bouquet of lavender potpourri and ripe black cherries. It's full-bodied and rich without seeming heavy at all, the ripeness balanced by fresh notes of herbs and soft tannins. No doubt some purists will quibble with the level of ripeness (it's labeled at 14.5% alcohol), but to my mind, there is no arguing with the hedonistic pleasure ride this wine delivers. And while it's approachable now, the tannins that appear on the finish suggest at least a decade of positive evolution ahead." Drink 2018 - 2030
