A deal price on this newly labelled and unique wine from Escarpment. This dry Martinborough Pinot Gris takes its inspiration from Europe. Though not from Alsace, home of rich aromatics, so much as from Burgundy -- home of fine Chardonnay. This wine offers the rich stone fruits of Pinot Gris but, by aged barrels and partial malolactic (buttery) fermentation, it also offers the weight and oak texture of a serious, age-worthy white Burg. A great wine from a stellar year - try this!

Its Origins

The four owners of Escarpment - Larry and Sue McKenna, Robert and Mem Kirby - met by chance through a mutual friend in 1998. But their shared sense that New Zealand had great things to offer the world of Pinot Noir saw them going into business the very same year. Using winemaker Larry McKenna's local knowledge they settled on Martinborough’s alluvial Te Muna terrace - then hardly on the map but now an important and renowned sub-region. A winery name was eventually chosen that was sufficiently sublime yet descriptive of the vineyard’s own distinctive landscape, but the name no doubt also makes reference to the famous limestone escarpment that forms the spine of France’s Burgundy region - from which McKenna draws his key traditions and inspirations. McKenna began his studies in his native Australia before his OE brought him to New Zealand, where his main position was CEO and Winemaker of Martinborough Vineyards over a period of extraordinary growth between 1986 and 1999. Since establishing Escarpment McKenna has consistently made superb terroir wines in many varietals, while further consolidating his particular reputation as New Zealand’s foremost expert in serious, savoury, premium Pinot Noir.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Barrel-fermented pinot gris with ripe pear and peach fruit flavours enhanced with nutty yeast lees, toast and a suggestion of spicy oak. Dry, flavoursome wine with a backbone of fine tannins. A classy wine with development potential 3/4/2018 " Drink 2018 - 2021

17.5/20 Raymond Chan

"The nose is softly full with good depth and presence of ripe yellow stonefruits intermixed with savoury exotic yellow florals, a little honeysuckle and nuances of minerals. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has gently sweet and lusciously rich flavours of yellow stonefruits entwined with honeysuckle notes, along with nuances of florals and nuts. The mouthfeel is rounded with a soft, deep core, and balanced by light acidity, and underlined by light textures. As the wine flows, the florals and honeysuckle elements blossom and carry to a soft, dry finish. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 3+ years. Fruit from the Martinborough Terrace, given overnight skin contact and fully barrel-fermented to 14.1% alc. and <1 g/L RS, the wine undergoing partial MLF. 17.5+/20 Mar 2018 RRP $29.00."
