The superb and silky top Chardonnay from Hawkes Bay icons, Elephant Hill. The Salome is sourced mostly from their original Te Awanga site, where only the best fruit is used to produce a top cuvee full of gently lush white fruits with a feminine, gently floral and mineral feel. Palpable fruit weight and quality makes this very satisfying now, while harmony and elegance mean any palate will find it simply delicious -- for a few years to come. Yummy!

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Elephant Hill's flagship chardonnay is mostly (83%) from their coastal Te Awanga vineyard which explains the crisp acidity and bright lime, citrus, subtle tree fruit and delicate oyster shell, mineral flavours. A wine of power and finesse. Very impressive. Should develop well with bottle age. 9/4/2018." Drink 2018 - 2023

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"A compelling chardonnay; the wine is elegant yet powerful, displaying golden peach, fig, lemon peel, vanilla and toasted hazelnut characters. It is concentrated and impressively weighted on the palate, delivering excellent fruit purity and intensity, wonderfully enhanced by multi-layered mouthfeel and bright acidity, finishing extremely long and refined. $75.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. April 2018." Drink 2019 - 2026

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The very classy 2016 vintage (*****) was estate-grown at Te Awanga (83 per cent) and in the Bridge Pa Triangle (17 per cent), and fermented and matured for a year in French oak barrels (34 per cent new). A beautiful, notably refined young wine, it is highly fragrant, with gentle, mealy, biscuity aromas adding complexity. Full-bodied, with ripe stonefruit flavours, showing lovely delicacy and concentration, finely balanced acidity and a long, seamless finish, it's already delicious but likely to be long-lived; open 2020+."
