Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"From Elephant Hill's Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa vineyards. Classy 'new world' wine with a mix of dark berry, spice, chocolate/mocha and cigar box flavours. An elegant wine with impressive density and length." Drink 2019 - 2025
95/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
"Violets and blackberry fruits, spices and leather, violets and Doris plums. Oak. Enticing complexity and varietal vigor. Fleshy, fruity, ripe and dry. Very youthful on the palate with firm tannins - chalky needle point textures. The violets, olive leaf and black berry fruits of Cabernet Franc are ripe and delicious. Well made, lengthy and memorable." Drink 2019 - 2025
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"This is impressively ripe and wonderfully expressed on the nose showing blackcurrant, mixed berry compote, vanilla, mint chocolate and cedar characters, leading to a concentrated palate that is fleshy and velvety. The wine offers terrific fruit power and richness, brilliantly structured by fine, chalky tannins. At its best: now to 2026. $54.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. Feb 2019."
