A superb Syrah from the smallest vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels. After making their first release in 2015, this label from a small family grower has already made its mark as delivering exceptional quality and authenticity. With gently ripe red fruits and subtle spice, this beautifully typical and complete Syrah is also the bearer of real elegance and sophistication. Offering outstanding quality for the price, Element is the real deal and a must-try for Hawkes Bay Syrah lovers.

Its Origins

Element is a new and very stylish boutique range that is grown on the Gimblett Gravels of Hawkes Bay. "Element Wines is the label of Dominic and Rachelle Smith who own a 4.2 ha site on Mere Road in the Gimblett Gravels with 2.66 ha of vines. They have Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Viognier, the first vines planted in 2004. Their intention is to make wines that showcase varietal purity. The Smiths are hands-on with all aspects of the viticulture and winemaking, and employ open top fermenters and basket presses at a local winemaking facility. The wines from the 2015 vintage [were] their first commercial releases." Raymond Chan

What The Critics Say

93/100 Andrew Caillard MW

"Medium crimson. White pepper, mulberry aromas with an aniseed note. Light, squashy and delicious to drink with redcurrant, mulberry, peppery fruits, lacy dry textures but generous fruit density. Finishes firm with acidity poking through." Drink 2018 - 2027

93/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie

"Slippery red of spice and savouriness, red berry-red cherry fruit characters, fine kind of feel, silky and juicy at once. Good concentration of flavour but length too. Firm, chewy finish is the goods too. Serious syrah here. Worthy."

Excellent to Outstanding Otago Daily Times

Savoury notes, blood, iron filings, pepper with almost violetty florality. Supple, textural entry leads to a chewy, grainy mid-palate, with raspberry, boysenberry and blackberry along with earth and licorice, the savoury undercurrent coursing through the wine. Power without heaviness, complexity, the tannins subside, the acidity lends vibrancy, with a juicy, lip-smacking long dry finish. Fascinating.
