65% old Grenaches, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. Brother and sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon continue to work wonders at Janasse, and farm 80 hectares of vineyards spread over a number of wine appellations: Châteauneuf du Pâpe, which is all located in the north-east of the appellation in the commune of Courthézon to be precise, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. Concrete tanks are used for the Grenache and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre; in other words, everything is fairly traditional; it is the quality of the raw materials which is so impressive.
What The Critics Say
17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming
"Delicious red fruit aromas – redcurrant, red cherry and a lovely rose petal note too. Instant, satisfying complexity here. Very fine tannin, medium length, lovely chewy texture. Stands out for its purity and breadth of fruit. 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah,10% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault. (RH)" Drink 2018 - 2034
90-92/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2015 vintage)
"Bright violet. Vibrant, mineral-accented raspberry and cherry scents, along with hints of candied lavender and anise. Seamless and focused on the palate, offering energetic cherry and red berry flavors that become spicier and deeper with air. Finishes vibrant, sweet and quite long, featuring a resonating raspberry note and a hint of fine-grained tannins that sneaks in slowly. (made with 30 percent whole clusters and aged in a combination of concrete tanks and barriques)."
90-92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck (2015 vintage)
"The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape sports a medium ruby color as well as perfumed notes of strawberries, currants, dried herbs and dried flowers. Elegant, medium to full-bodied and polished, drink it on release and over the following decade.
One of the finest run estates in all of Châteauneuf du Pape is Domaine de la Janasse, which is managed today by the brother and sister pair of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Looking at the 2014 and 2015 releases, both lean towards the more finesse-driven end of the spectrum, with Pinot Noir-like textures and less overt concentration than past vintages. That’s certainly expected in a vintage like 2014, but is surprising in a vintage like 2015. While the estate’s reds, both Châteauneuf du Papes and Côtes du Rhône, are well known, don’t make the mistake of missing their whites, as these are some of the most impressive and age-worthy wines in just about every vintage. It’s also worth noting the new Isabelle Sabon Clos St Antonin releases, also reviewed in this report. This is a new estate located just beside the Plan de Dieu and they release four cuvées: one white and three reds."
