Another truly outstanding vintage for this famous Chateauneuf from the Sabon family. This treasured old vine cuvee offers an impeccably elegant and complete expression from sources in four classic soil types -- pebbly, sandy, sandy limestone and red clay. Among our finest of all our imports, this Vielles Vignes from a superb vintage is a must-have for the decanter and cellar.

Its Origins

Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. Brother and sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon continue to work wonders at Janasse, and farm 80 hectares of vineyards spread over a number of wine appellations: Châteauneuf du Pâpe, which is all located in the north-east of the appellation in the commune of Courthézon to be precise, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. Concrete tanks are used for the Grenache and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre; in other words, everything is fairly traditional; it is the quality of the raw materials which is so impressive and for that reason alone, leaving aside the clear skill and vision of the Sabons, that we are delighted to take on these excellent wines in our listings.

What The Critics Say

99/100 The Wine Cellar Insider, Jeff Leve

"Deeply colored, this is incredibly concentrated. The wine is fleshy, silky and palate staining. The fruit coats your palate, but it's never heavy, or overblown. Instead, everything is in balance. The richly textured wine has polish, length and purity, along with a sexy style and a finish that you cannot stop tasting, staying with you for over 50 seconds! The wine is a blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5%Mourvedre."

97+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"Time will tell if this wine equals the stellar 2015; it's certainly very close in quality. The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is a blend of approximately 75% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah and the rest other permitted varieties. Tarry and deep on the nose, it delivers waves of blackberries and black cherries on the palate, framing those flavors with plenty of richness, layers of silky tannins and a long, elegant finish." Drink 2018 - 2035

94-96/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"Bright violet. Heady aromas of mineral-tinged dark berry liqueur, incense and cola, complicated by a suave floral nuance. Smoky and seamless on the palate, offering powerful, alluringly sweet black and blue fruit, spicecake, mocha and candied licorice flavors braced by juicy acidity. Closes with outstanding clarity, smooth tannins and floral-dominated persistence, leaving sexy floral pastille and star anise notes behind."
