A reference point for quality, Dog Point is made by ex-Cloudy Bay experts. This wine has beautifully defined flavours and aromatics but nothing aggressive or obviously shouting - a focus on perfect balance, complexity and texture make this a top notch example for the price and a Sav for not only Sav lovers but lovers of fine wine. A future legend and a must-try.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist and head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James began making wines from Sutherland's own vineyards, which were planted in the 70's and 80's. Additional fruit is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. The first vintage with the Dog Point label was 2004, using 2002 fruit. Over 200 hectares of vines are farmed, with sustainable/organic practices.

What The Critics Say

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"This wine offers a clear style contrast to Section 94, Dog Point's complex, barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc (see the Branded and Other White Wines section). Hand-harvested at several sites in the Wairau Valley, it is lees-aged in tanks but handled without oak. The classy 2016 vintage (5*) is highly scented, very fresh and vibrant. Weighty, it has searching, ripe grapefruit/lime flavours, firm acid spine and a dry (3 grams/litre of residual sugar), lasting finish. Highly concentrated and tightly structured, it's a very harmonious wine, arguably the best vintage yet."

18.5/100 Raymond Chan

"Bright, very pale straw colour with slight green hues, near colourless on the rim. The nose is full with harmoniously presented aromas of ripe green stonefruits, showing nectarines and greengages along with aromatic fresh herbs, capsicums and a subtle layering of minerals. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is fresh, crisp and zesty with bright, racy acidity enlivening the flavours of ripe gooseberries and green stonefruits. The flavours are softly balanced and integrated, and combine with soft phenolic textures to lend good mouthfeel and presence. The fruit has an underlying richness and lusciousness, enhanced by the acidity, and carries to a long, fine-textured, dry finish. This is a harmonious-fruited Sauvignon Blanc with flavours of gooseberries and green stonefruits, on a brisk, racy, fine-textured palate. Match with herb-marinated seafood and poultry dishes over the next 2+ years. Fruit from multiple sites predominantly Lower Brancott, Renwick, Fairhall, Omaka, with some Rapaura material, stainless-steel, 25% fermented with indigenous yeasts to 13.0% alc. and 3.7 g/L RS. 18.5/20 Jan 2017 RRP $27.00"

95/100 Bob Campbell

"Concentrated sauvignon blanc in quite a ripe style with nectarine, stone fruit, grapefruit, gooseberry and red capsicum flavours. Very appealing and quite textural wine with good weight and a lengthy finish. A class act."
