This superb Bannockburn wine is our best discovery from Central Otago. Steve Davies made wine for Carrick and Akarua before developing his own vineyard, which also supplies fruit to Pinot icons Valli for their famous Bannockburn label (at $70 bucks a bottle). Listed in the offical nz Fine Wine List. In other words, this has quality and pedigree to burn. It is subtly powerful and refined in the glass, with darkish fruit finely packed around a supple core of depth, freshness and mineral layering. Assured and sophisticated, Doctor's Flat is a leap above other Central Pinot at the price. Drink now or cellar a good while.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

The story of Doctor's Flat Vineyard begins in the late 1980s, in France and California, where Steve Davies first encountered great practitioners of old world winemaking, and the best of new world innovators. By 1999 Steve had settled in Central Otago, making Pinot for Akarua and on the hunt for his own land. He was looking for something in particular—a site that would offer all the conditions he had come to believe were essential for great Pinot. It was a long and thorough search, and in 2002 he found it, an elevated site on deep glacial gravels in Bannockburn. After then making wine for Carrick and supplying grapes to Valli, Steve's Doctor's Flat label is establishing a stellar reputation in New Zealand and overseas for sheer quality and command of both style and terroir.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2015 vintage)

"From an organically farmed three hectre vineyard in a Bannockburn site thats cooler than most in that subregion. Delicately scented pinot noir with floral, red rose, dark cherry, plum, spice and thyme flavours. Supple and appealing wine with an ethereal texture. It’s deliciously drinkable now but should age gracefully. A classy pinot noir. "

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)

"Exquisitely composed and styled, the engaging bouquet shows dark cherry, thyme, black olive and truffle characters with nuances of game and toasted almonds. The palate is concentrated and multi-layered, delivering gorgeous fruit purity combined with seductive savoury notes and sensual mouthfeel. From their single vineyard in the Bannockburn district, this is superbly long and gratifying on the finish. At its best: now to 2025. $49.50. www.doctorsflat.co.nz. May 2018."

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"This highly ageworthy red was estate-grown at Bannockburn, hand-picked, matured for a year in French oak barrels (25% new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep ruby, it is mouthfilling, savoury and supple, with concentrated, ripe cherry, plum and spice flavours and a finely structured, lasting finish. Best drinking 2021+. "
