From one of McLaren Vale’s most renowned wineries, the name of this top red refers to a vine affliction that reduces crops and concentrates flavour. It's a powerful Shiraz, but like all d'Arenburg wines it is not fruit-driven but balanced with a sinewy, spicy structure and huge savoury depth. Will cellar, but with a few years on the clock it is decanting nicely now.

Its Origins

Chester d’Arenberg Osborn continues his family estates traditional, hand-crafted wines - established by his great-grandfather Joseph Osborn in 1912 - in this classic estate in the McLaren Vale. His grape growing practices include minimal inputs and no fertilisation, cultivation and irrigation wherever possible, therefore achieving natural soil flavours with very low yields. The winemaking processes of the past have been maintained, capturing the unique small-batch character of the wines and the true flavour of the McLaren Vale region. All grapes, red and white, are basket-pressed. The reds are still traditionally fermented with the grape skins (caps) submerged in open wax-lined concrete fermenters utilising the age-old technique of foot-treading.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Qwine

"Dead Arm! A wine with great history and here's a beauty with a bright future. It's dense and dark with a basket of black fruits generously handed out. Plums and dark chocolate with fine spices, dashes of pepper plus some oak showing its hand. Cocoa-like tannins coat the mouth softly leaving a long and memorable finish. Time will only be its friend. A great wine." Drink 2020 - 2030+

93/100 Huon Hooke

"Very deep, dark, youthful purple/red colour, which stains the glass, and a licorice and plum jam bouquet, with some overripe touches. There is a touch of sulfide too. The palate is gritty-textured and full-bodied, with a distinct touch of bitterness. It's hard to divine the future of this wine. One thing is certain: it needs more time. 12 JAN 2019." Drink 2021 - 2039

93/100 The Wine Fron, Gary Walsh

"Inky, thick and tannic, raw power, intense purpleness, Ripe blackberry, dark chocolate, blackberry, plum and tar. Shows some slightly thinning alcohol influence, but more or less has the weight to carry it through. Finish is good and long, rugged tannin, some raspberry freshness, and hazelnut skin. Needs a few years, of course, though a bit of a brute right now." Drink 2021 - 2033
