Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes from current 2016 vintage
"Pale lemon straw. Aromas of peach, poached pear, pinenut and honeysuckle. Luscious texture with crystalline fruit notes and a lovely, long, dry finish. Match with seafood & coconut-based curries. Recommended cellaring of 1-4 years from vintage."
93/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)
"A beautifully expressed pinot gris, the bouquet shows elegant aromas of nectarine, fresh pear and floral with a hint of citrus lift. The palate delivers excellent fruit purity and harmony with a juicy mouthfeel. Lovely poise and balance, and the finish is delightfully long and appealing. At its best: now to 2020. $27.00. www.craggyrange.com. Oct 2015."
18-/20 Raymond Chan (2015 vintage)
"Bright, even, pale straw colour with light yellow hues, pale on rim. This has a very fresh and tightly bound nose with delicate aromas of white and rose-petal florals along with subtle notes of pears, and nuances of spices, herbs, and piquant, flinty mineral elements that grow in intensity with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, elegantly proportioned and lifted flavours of exotic florals, spiced pears and minerals show with good intensity and drive on a smooth flowing, near-unctuous palate. The wine follows a fine-textured line with subtle phenolics and soft, integrated acidity. The flavours carry to an elegant, soft and dry finish with lingering exotic florals. This is an elegantly concentrated, dry Pinot Gris with exotic florals and a good driven line. Match with Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese fare over the next 3+ years. Hand-picked fruit, 65% WBP and fermented in stainless steel to 13.7% alc. and 4.1 g/L RS, the wine aged 5 months on lees. 18.0-/20 Oct 2015 RRP $26.95."
