A stunning result in the latest hugely prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards in London. A whooping 97/100 and Best in Show. Of the more than 16,500 wines tasted, only 50 (0.3%) received esteemed Best in Show medals. A big coup for Craggy to receive this accolade for a wine at this price point- lap this up. Always a fresh and finely balanced red blend from Hawkes' Bay blend. Sporting a savoury dimension along with vibrant red fruit and spicy florals, this is Craggy Range classiness on display, and simply a delicious wine for this price.

Its Origins

Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Decanter

"This was a wine which convinced our judges that all the hard work that has gone into Bordeaux varieties (alongside Syrah) in Gimblett Gravels is beginning to pay off. It's a very dark black-red in colour, and the 63% of Merlot sings out in its soft, seductive black-cherry and black-plum fruits. The soft wealth on the palate is very impressive too, without any rigid acidity and backed, in this case, by some discreetly textured but impressively flavoured tannins (a touch of graphite and coal dust). It's sappy and vinous towards the end: real 'pleasure wine', yet never simple. Drink 2019-2025"

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Estate-grown in the Gimblett Gravels, the classy 2016 vintage (4.5*) of this Hawke's Bay red is Merlot-based (63 per cent), with smaller portions of Cabernet Sauvignon (18 per cent), Cabernet Franc (14 per cent), Petit Verdot (3 per cent) and Malbec (2 per cent). Matured for 10 months in oak barriques (28 per cent new), it has deep, purplish colour. Fragrant, concentrated and youthful, it's a stylish red, with strong blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, firmly structured and very age-worthy. Best drinking 2020+."
