The top red blend from market leaders, Craggy Range. With immense power but also finesse, the Sophia is a modern classic among NZ Bordeaux blends. As always, Craggy worked hard not to let grapes over-ripen, and the result is a serious wine that will decant beautifully at table in a couple of years – or age for many more.

Its Origins

Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship. The "Sophia" is produced entirely from their Gimblett Gravels Vineyard nestled on the right bank of the Ngaruroro River.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Huon Hooke (2016 vintage)

"Deep, quite youthful red/purple colour. The bouquet is spotlessly clean, fresh and bright, showing classy oak and properly ripe fruit. The wine is concentrated, full-bodied and powerful, with density, great structure and superbly ripe fruit flavours. A majestic wine."

97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)

"A compelling rendition of Bordeaux blend from their Gimblett Gravels vineyard, the bouquet is striking and complex, exhibiting dark plum, cassis, bay leaf, cedar and smoked game characters. The palate delivers awesome concentration and richness, wonderfully complemented by silky texture and fleshy mouthfeel. Tannins are fine and in abundance, providing outstanding structure and length to this breathtaking wine. 2015 Sophia is a blend of 73% merlot, 14% cabernet sauvignon and 13% cabernet franc. June 2017."

96/10 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front (2016 vintage)

"Wow. This is polished and perfect. Blackberry, tobacco, black olive, mocha, pencil and dried herb. Medium to full-bodied, graphite/mineral thing here, with depth and density, an elegant succulence, ripe and supple tannin pushing through, a raspberry and floral mouth-perfume, length and precision. A stand out. One of my favourite wines of the 600 something tasted in a few days over in NZ."
