2016 Craggy Range Le Sol Syrah
Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.
What The Critics Say
98/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Le Sol, one of the country's most respected syrah labels, cracked through the NZD $100 barrier with the 2013 vintage and has continued to adjust the price in a northerly direction. This is the first vintage that a small amount (20% ) of whole bunches has been used in the fermentation. Nicely perfumed and typically dense, rich syrah with a lovely texture and firm, rounded tannins. Powerful yet elegant wine with plum, berry and mixed spice flavours together with an interesting savoury edge. 30 JUL 2018." Drink 2018 - 2028
95/100 Cameron Douglas
"Powerful and focused bouquet of pepper, dark berries and currants. Nutty oaky aromas with a roasted walnut and smoky wood scents; a core of black currant and blue berry, pepper, clove, vanilla and smoked violet. A hint of balsamic rounds out the bouquet. Dry, loads of texture from abundant acidity and firm youthful tannins securing the backbone of the wine as significant and an example that is very young indeed. The package of flavours and textures are all present - all this wine needs is time. Decant for service with high protein food. Best from 2022 through 2030."
95/100 The Real Review, Huon Hooke
"Full-bodied, supple and nicely balanced at this early age, with spicy detailed aromas including some stemmy whole-bunch nuances. Elegant, supple, soft-tannin palate. Possibly the best Le Sol to date. (20% whole-bunch fermentation, for the first time) 09 AUG 2018." Drink 2018 - 2036
