Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship. Once known as the "Block 14" Syrah, the Gimblett Gravels Syrah is now a wine made using multiple parcels from the vineyard. Still 100% Syrah, the blending of these different parcels combine to create a wine that is truly distinct and appealing. The vines originate from a Heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand approximately 150 years ago.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current vintage
"Deepest red with a vibrant purple hue. Beautiful aromatics of violet, dark rose, freshly cracked pepper and boysenberry. Wonderful fruit purity on the palate balanced with precise acidity and fine, dusty tannins for a long, elegant finish." -- "We are excited about the potential for cool climate Syrah in New Zealand, especially grown on the Gimblett Gravels of Hawke's Bay." Matt Stafford, Chief Winemaker
95/100 Decanter Magazine (2015 vintage)
"Soft and quite oaky initially, with chocolate and vanilla spice and a dash of pepper. Ripe and quite sweet with fresh fruit, dark chocolate and a drying finish with solid, furry tannin. Textbook stuff. Has great cellaring potential. "
5 Stars Michael Cooper ( 2014 vintage )
"This label is overshadowed by the reputation of its stablemate, Le Sol, but proves the power, structure and finesse that can be achieved with Syrah grown in the Gimblett Gravels of Hawke's Bay. The outstanding, ageworthy 2014 vintage (5*) was hand-harvested at 23.7 brix and matured for 16 months in French oak barriques (26 per cent new). Dark and purple-flushed, it is mouthfilling, with concentrated, ripe plum and black pepper flavours, a hint of dark chocolate, and a long, spicy finish. Densely packed and still very youthful, it should hit full stride 2019+."
