A dark but super-refined Syrah from Craggy's Gimblett Gravels vineyard. Gold Medal and 95/100 in the Decanter World Wine Awards last year. It is ripe but fresh and structured, with flavours focused on inky black fruit, black pepper and black florals. Bang-on winemaking -- collectible wine at quaffing prices and stiff competition for much $50+ Syrah. Drink or cellar a good while.

Its Origins

Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship. Once known as the "Block 14" Syrah, the Gimblett Gravels Syrah is now a wine made using multiple parcels from the vineyard. Still 100% Syrah, the blending of these different parcels combine to create a wine that is truly distinct and appealing. The vines originate from a Heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand approximately 150 years ago.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Jamie Goode

"Beautifully peppery and vivid with lovely sweet black cherry fruit, some black pepper and clove, and some lovely grippy tannin under the sweet fruit. This is so drinkable but it also has a more serious side. Very fresh and a edgey and wild."

95/100 Decanter Magazine (2015 vintage)

"Soft and quite oaky initially, with chocolate and vanilla spice and a dash of pepper. Ripe and quite sweet with fresh fruit, dark chocolate and a drying finish with solid, furry tannin. Textbook stuff. Has great cellaring potential. "
