2016 Conterno Fantino Vigna Sori Ginestra Barolo

94 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
An important wine from older vines in one of Barolo's most historic vineyards. The Ginestra cru is located in Montforte d'Alba, where the sandy clay soils lie at a 30% gradient on a sun-facing slope. The result is a full-textured and rather brooding style, though with beautiful definition and finesse. An impressive prospect for medium to long term cellaring, the Sori Ginestra is one to collect.

Its Origins

Azienda Agricola Conterno Fantino was established in 1982 by Guido Fantino and Claudio Conterno. The state-of-the art winery is located on top of a hill overlooking the old village of Montforte d'Alba, enjoying an extraordinary view stretching out around the arc of Alps. Conterno Fantino's range comprises a Barolo DOCG from Sori Ginestra, and several DOC wines from Langhe, Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d' Alba and a mono-varietal wine (Chardonnay). The style of their Barolo is modern, showing rich aromas and flavours, lush, soft texture and well-rounded tannins.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra is rich and ample, with all of the textural resonance that this wine always shows. A rush of black cherry, plum, licorice, lavender, spice and menthol builds in a sumptuous, racy Barolo loaded with personality. Aging in oak accentuates the wine's body and overall richness." 97/100 James suckling (2015 vintage)

"This has a very impressive nose with ripe red cherries and plums, as well as abundant notes of sweet spice. The palate delivers a very assertive, plush and fleshy impression with a core of incredibly vibrant fruit that holds super fresh. The tannins are vibrant and the length is very impressive."

96/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2015 vintage)

"You'll find broader strokes and more heft in the 2015 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra than in the other crus from Conterno Fantino, along with extra levels of power and dimension. This vintage boasts lots of fiber and intensity, with dark fruit contrasting against spice, tar and tobacco. The wine shows more structure at the back, too, one of the important differences that makes this wine well suited to longer cellar aging. This is simply a complete Barolo with gorgeous texture, so fine and detailed, and it will hold up for years to come."
