A superb traditional Port from a legend of a house. Cockburn (pronounced Coburn) were a pre-eminent Port house at the turn of the 20th Century, as shown by their 1908 vintage being identified in two recent historical tastings as best on the day and one of the best Ports ever made. New owners the Symington family have produced an ambitious wine that recreates the original's depth, elegance and finesse. From a vintage Jancis Robinson notes for its purity and freshness, the Cockburn's is a highly collectible prospect.

Its Origins

Cockburn was founded nearly 200 years ago by Scotsman, Robert Cockburn, who returned to Portugal after first visiting the country as a soldier fighting under Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars. Originally it was based in the Douro valley, the traditional centre of Port production. A year later, Cockburn moved east to the Upper Douro Valley. Cockburn has a reputation as innovators, which, in such a traditional and conservative industry is sometimes considered disregard for the “rules”. It has, however, brought them great success, namely the revival of the Touriga Nacional vine. A grape recognised for its exceptional quality. Touriga Nacional now accounts for 35% of Cockburns yield. Cockburns has led the way in modernising standards of wine and environmental management and in 1994 it became the first wine company to be awarded the ISO 9002 for quality management, wine making and production operations. The ex-owners of Cockburns, Beam Global Spirits, decided to divest the Cockburn’s Port Brand to the Symington Family Estates, the leading producer of premium quality ports. Following the transaction, the Symington family has applied their skill and expertise in the production of Port, which dates back for generations, towards further development and growth of Cockburn’s around the world.

What The Critics Say

99/100 James Suckling

"This shows fantastic graphite and dark-berry character with black-stone undertones and hints of dried roses. Full-bodied and very tight and precise. Good kick in the end. Love the polished tannins, which are totally folded into the wine. Reminds me of the 1947 Cockburn. Try in 2024." Drink 2024 -

95/100 Vinous, Neil Martin

"The 2016 Cockburn’s, which comes mainly from the Bico de Pato vineyard, is deep in colour, perhaps more so than other vintages of this Port encountered during previous declaration tastings. The nose is tight at first, almost Bordeaux-like with blackberry, raspberry coulis, touches of inkwell and cassis. There is admirable purity here. The palate is beautifully balanced with supple tannin, a wonderful line of acidity and immense harmony. There is presence but not weight, a silky smooth finish with hints of raisin and fig that linger tenderly in the mouth. What a marvellous Cockburn’s! Production is 2,450 cases." Drink 2023 - 2050

94/100 Derek Smedley MW

"The nose is perfumed floral a mix of flavours the palate has layers of savoury black fruits and red fruits the mid palate silky and smooth. Ripe black fruits in the middle are backed by chocolate the tannins firm but ripe well integrated. The back palate has a savoury herbal quality with a mix of blackberry and black cherry." Drink 2035 - 2063
