Chateau Clauzet is owned by Baron Maurice Velge. He first purchased a couple hectares of vineyards in St. Estephe from Château de Côme, in 1997. He purchased a little later Château Clauzet and its 6 hectares, then gradually increased to the current 23 hectares. The vineyards are neighbours of Lafite and Cos d’Estournel and have very similar soils, deep gravel and gentle slopes thus providing good drainage. Wine maker José Bueno worked for 23 years at Baron Philippe de Rothschild with Chateau Clerc Milon and Chateau d’Armailhac. Chateau Clauzet only makes one wine.
What The Critics Say
90-92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Neal Martin
"The 2016 Clauzet offers rich and opulent dark cherry and blueberry fruit on the nose, more floral than earthy compared to its peers, but with commendable delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry and I appreciate how those slightly rigid Saint Estèphe tannins provide the backbone here. It will need three of four years to mellow in the glass, but this has great potential." Drink 2020 - 2035
16.5/20 Jancis Robinson MW
"Energetic and stony with real energy and sap. Sinewy and absolutely classic for the appellation with real persistence. GV" Drink 2024 - 2032
87-90/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"Dark and brooding in the glass, the 2016 Clauzet offers quite a bit of character. Smoke, gravel, game, spice and earthy notes add shades of complexity in this powerful Saint Estèphe that packs plenty of punch."
