The top Monastrell from this outstanding estate, which is one of Spain's undisputed leaders in this grape. Considered perhaps the definitive wine of the entire Jumilla region, this superb red was sourced entirely from of old Monastrell vines (75+ years) that remain on their original rootstocks in the famous La Solana single-vineyard. Fermeneted underground in stone tanks, the wine is then aged for 22 months in new French oak before being bottling unfiltered. One of the best wines out of Spain, the Pie Franco is exceptional. Volumes are low, so be in quick.

Its Origins

Bodegas Casa Castillo is an unexpected discovery and a wonderful one. It is located on the plateau of the underrated wine region, Jumilla, with a 174-hectare vineyard which enjoys a high altitude and the cooling influence of the Mediterranean. Any lovers of Bandol wines should take note of Casa Castillo; the grape varieties they use are led by Monastrell (Mourvèdre). These are old bush vines that yield very small amounts of highly concentrated juice. A modern approach to winemaking is taken, with cold macerations to retain freshness and new French oak for high quality tannins and structure. The wines are generally bottled unfiltered to allow them to be as expressive as possible and they are a bargain for the quality produced.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez

"Surprisingly enough, it feels riper than the 2017, when the year was colder and wetter. It has persistent and pungent flavors and is juicy within the dry and stony character of the texture." Drink 2019 - 2030

93/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2015 vintage)

"Bright magenta. Dark berries, incense, potpourri and oak spices on the expansive nose. Smooth, appealingly sweet and open-knit, offering juicy blackberry, cherry-cola and mocha flavors that are sharpened by a snap of tangy acidity. Finishes on a building floral note, with strong persistence and even tannins that add shape and gentle grip. This wine drinks wonderfully now but it also has plenty of upside for the patient wine lover who has the foresight to stash some away. (all whole clusters; raised in 500-litre French oak barrels, 20% of them new)."
