A lovely natural wine from serious Central Otago players, Carrick. Thier longstanding ethos of organic winemaking has allowed winemaker Francis Hutt to strike out with a beautiful label or two of natural wine. Made without sulphites or additives by strictly non-intervention methods, this wine offers a sort of sophisticated simplicity in which the bright juicy fruit doesn't feel too 'crafted', retaining a nice directness within its flow of linear acidity and fine tannins. Not 'rustic' but more a celebration of the natural elements in wine, Carrick's love letter ('Billet-Doux') is an adventurous and charming wine experience. (No sulphites added)

Its Origins

Carrick is an integrated organic vineyard, winery, restaurant and cellar door in Bannockburn Central Otago. Known for their quality premium Pinot Noir, Carrick also grows and makes Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc; wines noted for their fruit expression and clarity. Steve Green, the owner-manager of Carrick, the viticulturist, the winemaker and the chef brings understanding and experience to making fine wine and food. This pride is reflected in the care of the vineyard and environment – Carrick has a flock of free range hens, giant compost heaps and a community garden, all part of the Carrick philosophy.

"Light red with slight purple hues. The nose is tightly bound, quite elegant, a tad lean and slender, but with fine concentration of red berry fruits with herb and earthy interest. On palate richer than the nose suggests, but still taut and slender in expression. The fruit is not shy, showing freshness and brightness. Lifted by herbal elements that carry to a light finish. 100% Abel clone, certified BioGro organic, destemmed and fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in neutral oak, total sulphur at < 10 ppm. 17.5-/20 Nov 2017 RRP $36.00."

Winemaker notes on current 2016 vintage

"100% Abel clone on rootstock planted 2008, BioGro certified. This vineyard was planted under BioGro, strict organic regimes which are also recognized in the European Union. Hand-picked and destemmed to open top fermenter. One punch per day. 18 days on skins Matured in 3 year old French oak. Bottled February 2017 Total Sulphur <10ppm and 13.5% Alcohol. 300 bottles under natural cork. Let s talk stability and texture."
