Established in 1970 in the Margaret River by wine industry pioneer David Hohnen and his brothers Mark and Giles, David may be familiar to New Zealand drinkers as the founder of Cloudy Bay, Cape Mentelle’s sister winery in Marlborough. Although Cape Mentelle are more widely known for their Cabernet Sauvignon and other red wines, it was this extension which lead to more finesse and an overall turning point in the wines. Named after the nearby Cape which itself took its name from the French “Baudin Expedition” which charted the coast of Western Australia in 1801. They named the Cape after notable French scientists, geographer Edmund and his cartographer brother Francois-Simon Mentelle. From humble beginnings of just 16 hectares on what is now referred to as the “Wallcliffe Vineyard”, the brothers now have more than 150 hectares under vine and the winery crushes about 1,700 tonnes of fruit from the estate vineyards and contract-grown fruit sourced from within the region.
What The Critics Say
95/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson
"Always a leader in the Margaret River shiraz stakes. Yes. Beautiful wine. Buy and drink with confidence. Black cherry, woodsy spice notes, plum and peppercorns. A swoosh of smoky oak. Medium-weight and then some. Feels commanding. Absolutely on song. Excellent length too."
95/100 Huon Hooke (2015 vintage)
"Deep, bright red/purple colour and a fresh, bright, fruit-driven and charming aroma. Spicy red and darker fruits. Full-bodied, rich and deep, with lovely fresh, bright flavour and good textural density and fleshiness. Excellent wine. 29 MAY 2017."
