An exciting new wine from Callejo using the local white variety, Albillo. Naturally ripe tropical/stone fruits are tightened up and given mineral freshness by this elevated site, with partial barrel and lees aging adding layers of complexity. A very distinctive fish/food wine that is a bit like a top Chablis but fuller flavoured, more powerful and much cheaper! Well worth a try.

Its Origins

The Callejo family owns 60 hectares of low yielding Tempranillo vines (Tinto Fino as it is known in Ribera del Duero) ranging in age from 25-70 years. Felix Callejo uses grapes from its Estate only. The grapes are carefully selected and hand picked into small cases of 30 pounds. Carried in small quantities, there is no danger of having the grape skins break and sparking an undesired premature fermentation. The crates are taken directly to the winery, where they go through two selection tables, the second one selecting grape by grape and discarding any imperfect grapes.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2012 vintage)

"Light, hazy gold. Ripe citrus and orchard fruits on the deeply perfumed nose and palate. Ginger, buttered toast and honey qualities build with air, along with a hint of dusty minerals. Rich yet lively wine with strong closing thrust and a lingering floral nuance. Has the heft to handle rich foods and the vivacity to serve alongside lighter dishes.100% barrel-fermented Albillo."
