A glimpse at the legendary Burn Cottage Pinot, this 'second' label is much better than many producer's premium option. The harmony and artisinal quality are palpable here, with nuance and complexity lying behind penetrating fruit clarity. Made from three blocks – one biodynamic like their estate blocks, one organic and one managed sustainably – the style is silky and approachable but with the concentration to age. Prices are rising steeply in the boutique category, so get in at the ground floor with this inexpensive pedigree and deliciousness. Very limited stocks!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Burn Cottage Vineyard Property is a twenty four hectare estate in the foothills of the Pisa range in Central Otago, New Zealand. The vineyard is owned by the Sauvage family which also owns the celebrated Koehler Ruprecht estate in the Pfalz region of Germany, as well as several fine wine importing and wholesaling companies in the United States. The property was purchased in 2002. It was much coveted in the region for it is sheltered from both northerly and southerly winds by large hills and forms a beautiful, protected bowl, much like a modern amphitheatre.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A blend of grapes from two vineyards in the Pisa area and a third on the east bank of Lake Dunstan. Appealing pinot noir that's just a little tight and closed at this stage. Cherry, plum, floral, fresh herb and spice flavours restrained by slightly stemmy tannins. Should develop well with bottle age. 14/10/2018" 2018 - 2024

5 Stars Raymond Chan

"The nose is softly full and voluminous with complex, savoury aromas of dark-red berry fruits harmoniously entwined with dark herb notes and a little whole bunch stalk perfume. This has ripeness and reveals dark-red floral, thyme herb and earthy elements with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate has an elegantly packed, sweet core of flavours of savoury red along with plums, dark herbs, with liquorice and spice nuances, unfolding red florals. The fruit is rich and mouthfilling and is supported by grainy tannin extraction and grip providing texture and structure, and a thread of enlivening acidity. The flavours carry to a long, lingering, plush finish with some underlying power. Match with casseroles and slow-cooked game meats over the next 4-5 years. A blend of 8 clones of Pinot Noir, fruit from 28% ‘Mk II’ vineyard, 21% ‘Burn Cottage’ and 20% ‘Northburn’, fermented with 22% whole clusters to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 19% new French oak. 18.5-/20 Oct 2018 RRP $45.00."
