From one of Volnay's very best sites, the Caillerets is a reviewer favourite among the Bouchard offerings. The name of this lime-rich vineyard refers to the abundant small pebbles, which assist drainage. The pebbles also reflect light up to the grapes, gently aiding them to ripeness while on this ideal southeast-facing slope they remain sheltered from the harsh afternoon sun. This long and complete process ensures dimension and finesse, producing a beautiful expression that balances the feminine, aromatic elegance of the Volnay appellation with the slightly denser palate of Bouchard's plot. A gem of the range for a very reasonable price.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

92-94/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows

"More discreet wood more easily allows the overtly spicy aromas of poached plum, lavender and tea, The round yet reasonably well-detailed flavors possess a sophisticated mouth feel as well as fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, mineral-driven and very firm finish. Unlike the Grèves however, this excellent effort should be reasonably approachable after 5 to 7 years." Drink 2031+

92-94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Neal Martin

"(from a very good yield of 40 hectoliters per hectare, as this vineyard, which Weber told me "usually gets hit by something or other," was not affected by frost in 2016): Good dark red. Alluring, mellow aromas and flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, spices and minerals, plus a suggestion of toffee. Round, silky and plush, offering mouthfilling voluptuousness without losing its shape. The compellingly round, sweet finish shows a fine dusting of tannins and superb length. Absolutely no sign of vine stress here!"
