Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.
What The Critics Say
Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
"(just finished its secondary fermentation; aged in 25% new oak): Bright, light yellow. A bit more oaky than the preceding Beaune wines, showing aromas of pear and white pepper. Nicely concentrated, ripe and fine-grained, with its white stone fruit and spice flavors conveying good energy and thrust; just a hint of smokiness from the Chassin barrels. This moderately thick, solid premier cru finishes with a slight peppery edge."
91-93/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Neal Martin (2015 vintage)
"The 2015 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain has an attractive bouquet with walnut and subtle praline scents infiltrating the citrus fruit. There is certainly good intensity here. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, edgier than either of the Meursault premier crus from Bouchard and bridled with fine salinity on the slightly oaky finish that urges you back for another sip. Excellent - this is one of the picks from Bouchard Père this year."
