A fine Pinot Noir from an old, exclusive vineyard in Beaune. Clos de la Mouse is an ancient walled garden that dates back 800 years, owned entirely by Bouchard so bottled as a monopole. The thick layer of red clay is not a common soil type in Burgundy, and gives unusual richness and a plush texture. This wine is therefore even more approachable than other Beaune Premier Crus, but it retains the local earthy spice in addition to saline and iron/rust nuances of the terroir. From a great vintage, this is piece of history and superb value at this low price.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

91-93/100 and rated Sweet Spot Outstanding in Burghound, Allen Meadows

"Very generous wood and menthol influence fights with the otherwise elegant aromas of red and dark cherry where additional breadth is present in the form of spice and earth. The dense yet attractively refined flavors possess a lovely, even caressing mouth feel before offering outstanding depth and length. Note that my predicted range assumes that the wood treatment will eventually be integrated as it is borderline heavy-handed today." Drink 2028+

90-92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Neal Martin

"The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse, a monopole of the domaine, was cropped at around 22 hectoliters per hectare. I found the nose better defined and more detailed than the Beaune du Château this year, floral and quite elegant in style. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin, veins of blue fruit strafing the red with a rounded, quite caressing finish. What a damn gorgeous little Beaune this is." Drink 2019 - 2032
