"One of my favorite value wineries, Bodegas Borsao was founded in 1958 and Jorge Ordoñez has been bringing these wines into America since he started his company, Fine Estates From Spain, in 1987. He literally put the Campo de Borja appellation on the map, and has done much to encourage consumer attraction to the Grenache grape that is grown in abundance. This winery owns 3,700+ acres of vines, one-third planted with Grenache and the rest Tempranillo, Viura, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mazuelo. All the vineyards are planted at relatively high elevations above 1,300 feet. The soils tend to be poor in organic material, but high in chalk/limestone intermixed with sand, iron and gravel. The hallmark of the Borsao wines are their unmanipulated, fresh, lively fruit character." Parkers Wine Advocate.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on 2016 vintage
"Very intense cherry red color with tones of purple. Great concentration of aromas of ripe red fruit with floral nuances on the nose. In the mouth, it is a well-structured rich wine that evokes tastes of blackberry, plum and tones of leather and vanilla, with soft and silky tannin. Mountain vineyards with an age of 35 to 60 years situated at an altitude of 600-700 meters, on stony, slimy soils with clay and limestone."
91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Robert Parker (2015 vintage)
"Even better, and clearly one of the greatest values in the wine world, is the 2015 Tres Picos. It is a large cuvée of 24,000 cases from 100% Grenache, fermented in both oak and steel and aged in French oak prior to being bottled. The vines come from a relatively high elevation of nearly 2,300 feet from a vineyard planted in 1956. This wine shows loads of classic Grenache characteristics, such as pepper, licorice, underbrush, Provençal herbs and a boatload of black cherries and raspberries. The wine is rich, medium to full-bodied, pure and luscious and hedonistic. Drink it over the next several years...My favorite value winery not only in Spain, but in the world, is Bodegas Borsao in the up-and-coming appellation of Campo de Borja in the provence of Zaragoza. These are all relatively high-elevation vineyards planted at 1,600 feet to 2,300 feet elevation. A continental climate effects the dry-farming of these areas." Drink 2016 - 2019
92/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2014 vintage)
"(fermented in a combination of French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks, then aged in French oak for ten months before bottling):" Bright violet color. Heady, exotically perfumed bouquet of ripe red and dark berries, incense and candied flowers, with a smoky mineral overtone and a hint of Asian spices. Intense, deeply pitched raspberry liqueur and cherry-cola flavors stain the palate while displaying a distinctly vibrant quality. Blends power, depth and finesse in a way that's uncommon at anywhere near this price point. Closes sweet, supple and very long, with velvety tannins coming in late to add shape and gentle grip. These bush vines date back to the early 1920s and yield less than two tons of fruit per acre"
