This white label is sourced from self-tended vines of nearly 30 years old on Te Muna Road and surrounded by the likes of Craggy Range and Escarpment. This juice formerly went into one of the most famous names in Martinborough Pinot, but is today channeling quality into their own complex, refined and age-worthy offering. Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Big Sky Wines is the Te Muna Road Martinborough wine venture of Katherine Jacobs and Jeremy Corban who returned to New Zealand from France in 2005 to make world class, hand-crafted wines that express their origins. Katherine studied and worked in viticulture and winemaking in New Zealand and France, doing vintages in Bordeaux. Jeremy is a fourth generation winemaker, a scion of the famous Corban family. Katherine and Jeremy are part of the fabric of the Te Muna Road district, with well-known neighbours Craggy Range, The Escarpment Vineyard, Te Hera and Julicher Estate around them. Katherine and Jeremy took over a site established by Ian Campbell, with 1.8 ha of Sauvignon Blanc and clone 10/5 Pinot Noir planted in 1989, and 4.2 ha of clone 115 Pinot Noir planted in 1999. They have revitalised the vineyard and personally tend the vineyard. The first crops were sold as contract fruit, but from 2013, their own label ‘Big Sky’ became the main focus, taking 80% of the yield, a reversal of the past.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"It is gorgeously fruited and sweetly expressed on the nose showing dark cherry, plum, vanilla and cedar characters with nuances of toasted spice and game. The palate delivers excellent weight and fruit intensity, wonderfully framed by supple tannins. It is generous and elegant at the same time, finishing long and delectable. At its best: now to 2022. $40.00. www.bigskywines.co.nz. June 2019." Drink 2019 - 2022

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Offering good value, the 2016 vintage (5) is a classic sub-regional style. Bright ruby, it has a highly fragrant, savoury, inviting bouquet. An elegant, subtle red, it is sweet-fruited, with concentrated, slightly nutty flavours, supple tannins, and excellent depth, complexity and harmony. Already delicious, it should be at its best from 2021 onwards."
