Best's winery and vineyards are among Australia's best-kept secrets. Indeed the vineyards, with vines dating back to 1866, have secrets that may never be revealed: for example, one of the vines planted in the Nursery Block has defied identification and is thought to exist nowhere else in the world. Part of the cellars, too, go back to the same era, constructed by butcher-turned-winemaker Henry Best and his family. The Thomson family has owned the property since 1920, with Ben, the fifth generation, having taken over management from father Viv. Best's consistently produces elegant, supple wines; the Bin No. 0 is a classic, the Thomson Family Shiraz (largely from vines planted in 1867) magnificent. In the Wine Companion 2017 it was awarded the mantle of Wine of the Year from a field of almost 9000 wines. Very occasionally a pinot meunier (with 15% pinot noir) is made solely from 1868 plantings of those two varieties; there is no other Pinot Meunier of this vine age made anywhere else in the world. Justin Purser brings with him a remarkable CV, with extensive experience in Australia, NZ and Burgundy. -- James Hallidiay

95/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday (2015 vintage)
"This is all about showing how elegance and intensity can be woven together to create the perfect medium-bodied palate. Blackcurrant, a waft of leaf, a glimmer of eucalypt and cedary oak/tannin nuances all join hands to support each other on the long, fresh palate. Don't be deceived: this will stand proud for 30+ years thanks to its immaculate balance."
93/100 Tyson Stelzer (2010 vintage)
"Best's is on such a roll that it's entry cabernet has just lapped its shiraz! An unashamedly restrained, honed, coiled-up and structured cabernet, in the traditional, savoury style, the kind that gets overlooked in wine shows until I bang a gold medal score on it!"
