This has been called a "hypnotically charming" Sangiovese, produced by one of Umbria's leading organic producers. The Polvento is sourced in a single vineyard that was planted by the family 30+ years ago, with a view to proving the unique quality and consistency of ripeness that is possible in this premium sub-region. Lush and voluptuous — and yet packed with concentration and potential — the Polvento Sangiovese is a serious Italian for this price!

Its Origins

Barberani is one of Umbria’s most respected producers, famous for its clean, pure-tasting wines. The vineyards lie on hills overlooking Lake Corbara, close to the city of Orvieto in the south-west of the province, which lies south of Tuscany in Italy’s centre. Of the estate’s 80-odd hectares, 50 are dedicated to vineyards and olive groves. The close proximity of the lake below helps regulate the microclimate here by preventing extreme variations in temperature. Advised by consultant oenologist Maurizio Castelli, the estate, which uses no chemical herbicides or pesticides in its vineyards, is renowned for its clean, pure-tasting wines. By law, Orvieto is made from a combination of five grape varieties, of which the finest is grechetto, a Barberani speciality. Around 20,000 bottles of it are produced in every vintage under the designation of Grechetto Umbria IGT. Barberani also produce a fragrant dessert wine called Calcaia, from trebbiano di Toscana and grechetto grapes concentrated by noble rot (muffa nobile). It is similar to Sauternes in style but with a characteristic lightness of touch. More recently high class barrel-aged reds have been introduced, using sangiovese, merlot and cabernet. These can rival Tuscany’s best in quality, but not in price.

What The Critics Say

94+/100 Vinous, Eric Guido

"The remarkably pure and polished 2016 Barberani Polvento is just a baby, yet there is so much in store for the future. Here I’m finding a seductive display of Sangiovese, perfectly complemented by just a hint of spicy oak, as notes of black cherry, dried orange, clove and dusty flowers fill the senses. On the palate, silky textures usher in red berries, offset by brisk acids, as sweet spices and minerals mingle and fine tannins slowly saturate. It finishes long and dramatic, with depths of ripe red fruit offsetting its youthful structure, all framed by minerals and a twang of residual acids. There is an amazing balance here, yet it’s all so primary, leading me to believe that there’s a very bright future for the 2016 Polvento."

17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Tamlyn Currin (2018 vintage)

"Certified organic. 100% Sangiovese from biodynamically farmed vineyards, 30-year-old vines. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steels and aged in new barrels. Cherries in spice and pomegranate molasses – fruit that glows in the mouth, cashmere soft, jewelled. Spice that has a delicate Szechaun bite, soars through the mellifluous fruit, transparent. The tannins spiral around the fruit, silk and sand, supple and persistent. Hypnotically charming. (TC)." Drink 2020 - 2027
