2016 Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Noir

93 Points Bob Campbell MW

A beautiful example of a fuller-bodied Marlborough style. Rounded, ripe plum and spicy oak play a warming role against balanced acidity and fine tannins, all of which smacks of what a perfect season it was in 2014. The Province is not a wine that shouts like some, but subtly generous in that alluring and savoury way that Pinot should be. Another delicious offering from master winemaker Simon Waghorn and a snapshot at the bright future Marlborough has in elegant Pinot.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A blend of wine from the lower Waihopai and upper Brancott Valleys, Kekerengu Coast and lower Wairau. Elegant wine in a typical Marlborough style with red fruits and subtle spicy flavours. An approachable wine - soft and fruity with bright, fresh flavours 15 DEC 2019." Drink 2019 - 2022

93/100 "Outstanding" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier

"An alluring bouquet of Pinot Noir with aromas and flavours of ripe fruit, oak and bottle integration. Roses and plums, red cherry and vanilla, smoky oak and roasted nut. Dry, still firm with tension from the tannins and poise from the acidity. Flavours of red berry fruits and flowers continue leading to a lengthy, balanced finish. Decant for service as this wine is still developing. Serve with food." Drink 2020 - 2026

92/100 Wine Spectator (2015 vintage)

Impressive for the linear, focused beam of cherry, cranberry and Earl Grey tea notes, with white pepper and dried rose petal accents. The sleek body and spicy, lingering finish make this memorable. Drink now through 2028.
