Pinot Gris

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

"Freshly scented, mouthfilling and drier than most New Zealand Pinot Gris, the 2016 vintage (4*) was grown at sites in the Wairau Valley, Awatere Valley and further south, at Kekerengu. Pale and fragrant, it shows good varietal character, with vibrant, delicate flavours of pears and lychees, a gentle spiciness, and a dry (3 grams/litre of residual sugar), persistent finish. Best drinking mid-2018+."

"Colour/Appearance: Light Straw. Aroma/Bouquet: Pear and quince, light peach and citrus rind and a whiff of cardamom and nougat. Palate: Pure, focussed wine with a delicacy of structure, finishing crisp and dry. Stonefruit and pear flavours dominate, followed by some light citrus. Cellaring: Will age gracefully over the next six years. Suggested Foods: Great as an aperitif, with shellfish and seafood, pâtés, poultry, pork and light game as well as creamy mushroom or egg dishes. Serve Lightly chilled or at cool room temperature."
