Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
“Pure, varietal, fresh and lifted chardonnay bouquet with aromas and flavours of sweet, ripe white peach, lemon and lemon peel, raw cashew and toasty wood spices. Youthful with bright acidity, light creamy texture with flavours of vanilla and new
wood. Overall balanced and well made. Best drinking from early 2018 through 2024.”
90/100 Bob Campbell MW (2015 vintage)
"Creamy chardonnay with white peach, grapefruit, roasted nut and subtle bran biscuit flavours. Subtle rather than intense flavours. A rather restrained style with an appealing texture and moderate length 13/12/2017.
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 vintage)
"The 2015 vintage (4*) was hand-picked at two sites (Astrolabe Farm Vineyard, in the lower Wairau Valley, and Wrekin Vineyard, in the Southern Valleys), and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques and puncheons. Bright, light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling and vibrant, with strong grapefruit and peach flavours, slightly buttery and toasty notes, and good complexity. Drink now or cellar."
