From the unique limestone soils of Kekerengu, this Gris is rich and 'oily' but also complex and bone dry with heaps of dynamic stony-mineral flavours happening. That's a beautiful balancing act, we reckon, and makes this a Kiwi Gris from way outside the box. Deserves a try by itself or with an interesting food match.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier

“Delightful fragrant and gently aromatic bouquet with scents and flavours of white spiced tree fruits – pear and apple centric, but also sweet white floral and a distinctive minerality of wet stone. Youthful and refreshing acidity then an emerging Asian pear note and honeyed white fleshed fruits." Drink 2017 - 2022

91/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Moderately weighty pinot gris with nashi pear, mineral and nutty yeast lees characters. Made in a satisfyingly bone-dry style. Reasonably flavoursome wine, with good acidity and an ethereal texture. 9/7/2017." Drink 2016 - 2021

4 Stars Michael Cooper

“The youthful, very lively 2016 vintage (4*) was grown in the Sleepers Vineyard, hand-picked and tank-fermented. Light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling, with good intensity of pear and lychee flavours, a minerally streak, and a fully dry, crisp finish. Still unfolding, it should be at its best mid-2018+.”
