Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 vintage)
"The 2016 vintage (4*) was grown at Grovetown, in the lower Wairau Valley, and tank-fermented to dryness (4.1 grams/litre of residual sugar). Pale lemon/green, it is a lemon-scented, medium to full-bodied wine with fresh, crisp, citrusy flavour, a slightly minerally streak, and very good vigour and depth. Drink now or cellar."
89/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown
"The 2016 Vineyards Astrolabe Farm Dry Riesling is scented of lemongrass, lime leaves and straw with wafts of peach blossoms and dried herbs. Light-bodied and dry, with the slightest touch of residual sugar to balance, it has a racy backbone of acidity and long, clean finish." Drink 2017 - 2021
