An opulent Russian River Chardonnay from a classy producer. Thanks to the rolling fog that extends the growing season, this wine is a premium example of the classic Russian Stye -- where rich fruit flavours develop long on the vine then get lavished by a buttery malolactic fermentation and toasty, finely integrated oak. A special collaboration of two women at the top of Californian Chardonnay, the Windracer is a very sophisticated pleasure for this modest price.

Its Origins

WindRacer is a unique collaboration between two wine industry pioneers, Barbara Banke and Peggy Furth. The genesis of the winery came from a discussion about the merits of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from two of California’s top regions: Sonoma’s Russian River Valley and Mendocino’s Anderson Valley. Barbara’s preference for the Anderson Valley was a testament to the precision and linear focus of the wines. Peggy’s fondness for the Russian River spoke to the opulence and exotic aromatics of the wines. Both women know their way around wineries and vineyards. For many years Peggy was the proprietor of Chalk Hill Estate, one of Sonoma County’s most important producers. Barbara, as Chairman of Jackson Family Wines, oversees dozens of luxury-class wineries across four continents. Both Chardonnays are farmed for low yields and harvested by hand on a block-by-block basis. The wines are fermented in French oak barrels and aged on the lees for 12-16 months with frequent stirring. Stylistically, the Anderson Valley is tight and crisp while the Russian River is rich and creamy.

What The Critics Say

93+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (2014 vintage)

"The 2014 Chardonnay Russian River Valley has lemongrass, orange blossoms and cedar notes over a core of white peaches, grapefruit and green mango. Medium to full-bodied with a gorgeously creamy textured and mouth-filling stone fruit and citrus layers, it has a racy backbone and a very long finish, with some toasty notes coming through." 90/100 Wine Enthusiast (2014 vintage)

"Aged in French oak for more than a year (20% new), this is a full-bodied and layered wine. Strong aromas of French butter and baguette dominate the nose. The midpalate offers more brightness, revealing high-toned accents of apple blossom, lemon and mango wrapped in tart acidity before returning to the richness of crème brûlée on the close."
